GOOD ADVICE!! - The Importance
of English Proficiency
It is very important for your English to be good enough
for you to get the complete benefit of your studies,
be it a university foundation course, an undergraduate
course, a master’s degree or doctoral research.
For some areas of study, like sciences and computers,
your English proficiency does not need to be the very
highest – learning and understanding the technical
concepts and using what you study competently in real
situations is obviously more important than having
perfect English! You will see that required IELTS
/ TOEFL scores are usually lower for science and computer
courses. However, for other fields of study, like
Law, Business and Journalism, where very good English
is, for obvious reasons, vitally important, required
IELTS / TOEFL scores are high (IELTS 7.0 or even 7.5
at top universities). This might seem unfair, but
think of it like this: how can you expect to do well
on an art course if you cannot draw pictures and images?
(and, NO, you cannot just rely on computer graphics
to do everything for you on an art course!!!).
IF YOU HAVE A CONDITIONAL
OFFER BASED ON ACHIEVING AN IELTS SCORE, IT IS VERY
IMPORTANT THAT YOU PREPARE BY STUDYING MORE ENGLISH
– AN IELTS PREPARATION COURSE IS RECOMMENDED.
