WELT COMPLETE PREPARATION COURSE
Information on WELT
The Warwick English Language Test,
is a widely recognised and accepted test of English language proficiency for students entering British universities.
It comprises 3 papers:
Paper G1: Grammar and Usage
Paper G2: Writing
Paper G3: Academic Reading
The whole test takes about 3 hours and the time of each paper is as follows:
G1 (SectionsA & B) : 1 hour
G2 : 45 minutes
G3 : 1 hour
The Grammar and Usage Paper (G1)
contains 100 short multiple-choice items.
There are 50 items in Section A and 50 itemsin Section B.
Section A tests your knowledge of basic English grammar. You need to be able to choose the best way to complete a sentence grammatically.
Here is an example of the type of item on Paper G1 Section A:
EXAMPLE:
She "...me write a letter in English last night.
A. has helped B. will help
C. helped D. helps
Section B of Paper G1 tests your ability to understand short passages of written English.
Here is an example of the type of item in this section:
EXAMPLE:
The amount of meat eaten in France has increased in recent years. However, the French are eating less fish than they used to, probably because fish is:
A. better than meat
B. now rather expensive
C. good to eat
D. used in many recipes
Some of the questions in this section test your use and understanding of English words, and some questions test your ability to understand the relationships between sentences or parts of sentences.
Paper (G1) is a long test and most candidates will not finish the paper. Many students who are good at English do not manage to finish the test. Students just have to work as
quickly as possible and try to complete as much as they can.
It is not necessary to finish
the test to get a good score.
The Writing Paper (G2)
tests your ability to write accurately and appropriately in an academic context. In a British university, the ability to write coherently is extremely important because students are expected to demonstrate their understanding and express their opinions through writing, e.g. assignments, projects, exams.
In this paper, you are normally given 2 topics to write about in about 200-400 words
each. The topics vary from, for example, social or environmental issues to personal
interests. In one question you may describe something; in another you may be asked to
discuss and give your opinion for or against a proposal.
The Academic Reading Paper (G3)
tests your ability to read and understand longer
passages of written English of the type that you might be expected to be able to read in a Britishuniversity.
The paper begins with some questions to test your ability to read very quickly through a
passage to find specific information, for example, the date when a certain event took place. Then you are required to read the other passages and to answer some questions.
These questions will test such matters as how well you grasp the main ideas and the main
purposes of the writer, and whether you understand the meaning and function of certain key words and phrases.
WELT is deliberately designed as a long test so that students have every opportunity to show their ability in English. During the test you should work quickly and answer as many questions as possible. If you find any question difficult, just leave it out and go on to the next question. Do not worry if you cannot finish the test: only the very quickest candidates are expected to finish.
Our 40-hour WELT Preparation Course will familiarise you with the WELT test, give concentrated practice in your problem areas, e.g. Part B grammar, familiarise you with the types of questions set in the Reading and Writing and enable you to write effective answers within strict time limits. It will be very useful for any student planning to take the WELT and also those who have already taken lELTS with a score of 5.5 when 6.0 is required. The course concentrates on key skills and exam techniques in academic English and will probably enable you to raise your score by the half-band required.
